Spring Equinox is exact tonight at 8:49pm PST during the waning Dark Moon. While it is beautiful and sunshine-y here in Portland, we’re asked to practice social distancing, when what we really want to do is socialize and share in the buzz of excitement as the Sun brings life back to the Earth’s Northern Hemisphere. Spring Equinox is the time to celebrate the sign of life’s return from Winter. However, it’s also a time to honor the balance of light and dark, since at Equinox the day and night are split equally. The Sun rises directly in the East and sets directly in the West. Prepping for my ritual tonight: the black (dark) candle represents what I want to see decreased as the nights grow smaller. The white (light) candle represents what I want to see grow as the days become longer.
The Emperor card is ruled by Aries, and Spring begins at 0° Aries tonight. I use a Jesus-looking figure in the Lua Tarot, for the Emperor. He looks left to draw compassion and nurturance from the Empress as he leads with love in his heart. This Emperor reflects a kind authority and leader. I’m not totally sure that he is Jesus, the source material doesn’t indicate that, he could be a wandering sage for all I know! As I made the card, I likened it to my husband, who is an Aries, but I realize most people see Jesus here. And that actually works, since the esoteric teachings say that Jesus was also an Aries! This Emperor year has truly been tinged with Tower energy. I wrote a post about the astrology of this if you want to check out my divineMuses blog. The Age of Aquarius is coming and will be fully actuated by the end of this year. After the Tower comes the Star, which is ruled by Aquarius. The established ways are breaking down and we have a chance to do things differently. The “me against the world” attitude and “every man for himself” is no longer going to cut it. And, we are seeing that it does not work in the current situation we are finding ourselves. We are in this together and the humanitarian energy of Aquarius—the visionary, the illuminated mind, the reformist—is what will save us. We are on the precipice of change! Happy Equinox!
