![]() This morning, Rachel Pollack’s presentation, Tarot as a Medium: Readings to Communicate with the Dead, was incredible! She talked about some tarot cards and their potential meaning when they show up in a reading with the dead. She also shared two spreads one could use to communicate between the living person and the dead person. One of the spreads we did in the workshop is called Body Spread, which is based on the work of Anita Jensen. We paired up with a partner to test it out together. You can see the spread in this photo. The left side reflects the Living Person, while the right side reflects the Dead Person. You can also use this spread for any relationship. See what the card positions mean below. Living Person (Person A, left side) 1. Forehead Thinking 2. Mouth Saying 3. Heart Feeling 4. Solar Plexus 5. Groin Desiring Dead Person (Person B, right side) 1. Forehead Thinking 2. Mouth Saying 3. Heart Feeling 4. Solar Plexus 5. Groin Desiring The Heart Feeling position (no. 3) is where the hands of the body get put in this layout. The hands become card 6 on the outside and card 7 goes on the inside between Persons A and B. 6. Outer Hand Holds Back. What is being kept? This is what you keep for yourself and what the other person is keeping for themselves. 7. Inner Hand Shares. What both people share. What they give each other. This shows what Person A gives and what Person B gives. The Groin Desiring position (no. 5) is where the feet of the body get put in this layout (at the bottom of each column of cards). The feet become card 8 on the outside and card 9 on the inside between Persons A and B. 8. Outer Foot Walks Alone. How Person A walks without Person B and how Person B walks alone without Person A. 9. Inner Feet Walk Together. How Person A walks with Person B. What is given to Person B and what Person B gives to Person A. I also wanted to share some cards Rachel talked about in terms of relationships. This was in conversation about the Relationship Spread she gave us that was inspired by the work of Gail Fairfield's Tree Method, which Rachel said she had used for years. I believe this is found in Everyday Tarot. Here is that spread she shared with us: These are my notes from Rachel's discussion of some tarot cards that might show up in this spread and what they could mean. The Lovers: Ideal Relationship. Angel unites Adam and Eve The Devil: Controlling relationship. Wild, BDSM, etc. 3 of Cups: Top trine of the Tree of Life, possible soul relationship. A triad relationship. Ace of Wands: New passion, phallic (masculine wands), sexuality. You may look to the relationships within the cards that show up to give more insight into your reading. For example, Rachel spoke about herself as the High Priestess card and when her mother as the Empress card came up in a reading, she saw the Persephone and Demeter myth reflected. Rachel said that all the tarot cards are Gateways, for example, the High Priestess is the Gateway of Mystery. Carolyn Cushing's Tarot CombinationCarolyn Cushing has a tarot combination technique that Rachel shared with us. It is a powerful way to interact with the magic of tarot! Here are the examples I wrote down:
1 + 3 = 13 The Magic (Key I) of Life (Key 3) is Death (Key 13). 1 + 6 = 16 The Magic of Love (Key 6) is Fire/Destruction (Key 16). By combining the tarot numbers, you can unlock some incredible messages. This is just brilliant! I need to look into this more.
